1. Physiology of feeding and swallowing in children

1.1. Anatomic and physiologic differences in the newborn versus adults.

1.2. Developmental aspects related to feeding and swallowing:

1.2.1. Suckling and sucking.

1.2.2. Transition feeding development.

1.3. Oral sensory-motor/feeding development sequences.

1.4. Factors important for normal oral-motor and swallowing development.

2. Definitions / incidence / nature of the problem.

3. Causes of feeding and swallowing disorders in children.

4. Assessment of feeding and swallowing problems in children:

4.1. Bedside assessment.

4.2. Instrumental assessments (modified barium swallow, FEES, others)

Second lecture: 2 hours

5. Behavior Re-Adjument Therapy (BRAT) for feeding and swallowing problems in children:

5.1. Modification of the manner of feeding.

5.2. Positioning and posture changes.

5.3. Oral sensory-motor therapy techniques. ( + Maii Saad and Asser elsaeed)

5.4. Adaptive utensils. ( + Maii Saad and Asser elsaeed)

5.5. Modification of the food variables (bolus modification).

6. Behavioral management of special feeding problems in children:

6.1. Feeding and swallowing problems in CP children.

6.2. Infants with Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disorder (GERD).

6.3. Feeding and swallowing problems in pre-term children.

6.4. Behavioral feeding problems in children.
