Target Candidates

This Course is directed to

  • All health professionals who use steroids for different indications in Pediatrics: Pediatricians, General practitioners, Pulmonologists, Endocrinologists, Nurses..etc
  • Postgraduate students applying for master degree, professional diplomas in Pediatrics

Goal of the Course

This course will provide attendees with the necessary knowledge, skills and positive attitude regarding the appropriate use of steroids and prevention as well as management of complications regarding effects on  growth, endocrine system and bone metabolism.

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, attendees will acquire the following knowledge, skills and attitudes:

Knowledge

  • Classification and Types of Corticosteroids
  • Mechanisms of action of Corticosteroids as anti-inflammatory and immuosuppressive interventions
  • Different Indications of Corticosteroid use (systemic, inhalational , topical)
  • Different Types of Inhalational Corticosteroids
    • Endocrine and metabolic systemic complications of prolonged use or high doses of corticosteroids: endocrine disruption, growth retardation, delayed puberty, obesity, metabolic syndrome, adrenal suppression, iatrogenic Cushing Syndrome, osteopathy, hypocalcemia, osteoporosis and fractures.

Skills 

  • Calculate the dosing equivalents of different types of corticosteroids
  • Use the lowest effective dose to minimize the systemic side effects of corticosteroids
  • Adjust doses of corticosteroids during period of stress and acute illness.
  • Taper steroids appropriately to prevent adrenal withdrawal problems
  • Monitor growth and puberty development in children and adolescents receiving corticosteroids in high doses or prolonged duration
  • Prevent, early detect and appropriately manage systemic complications of prolonged use or high doses of corticosteroids on the endocrine system and bone metabolism

Positive attitude

  • Ensure safety and do no harm for children receiving corticosteroids by minimizing the risks of complications through appropriate prescriptions
  • Adopt a multidisciplinary team approach (Pediatricians, General practitioners, Pulmonologists, Endocrinologists, Orthopedicians, Nurses .)

Target Audience

Objectives

At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to:

  • improve knowledge on asthma pathophysiology as it applies to management;
  • apply asthma endotypes to clinical practice;
  • develop new strategies to manage difficult asthma cases. This session will provide a comprehensive review of the latest knowledge on asthma pathogenesis, clinical science and therapy.
